Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio distributes grants annually to not-for-profit organizations which provide healthcare services and health education throughout Bexar County and contiguous counties in South Texas. Recently the Children’s Behavioral Health Program of the Center for Health Care Services became a recipient of a $300,000 strategic initiative grant.
Judge Peter Sakai partnered with Children’s Behavioral Health Program for this grant. Judge Peter Sakai is a judge of the 225th District Court in Texas Sakai received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976 and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas Law School. Through Judge Sakai’s leadership, adoption of foster children in Bexar County has increased nearly 1000%.
Partnering with schools and parents CHCS’ Children’s Behavioral Health Program is able to identify mental health disorders early. Providing services such as Crisis Care, Foster Care and Early Childhood Intervention Services they are able to help children manage their illnesses. These services they also help students stay on track and achieve academic success.
Each year Bexar County over 1500 children are removed from their homes by child protective services due to abuse and or neglect. Approximately half of the children removed have a diagnosable mental health condition.
CHCS’ Restoring Hope: Healing Children and Families will address the need to provide coordinated care for the child, the biological parents and the caregivers. This innovative approach to care will promote improved outcomes for children in the following areas: mental health, academic success, juvenile justice avoidance and a shortened time in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Partners for Restoring Hope: Healing Children and Families include: The Bexar CARES System of Care, “Healing Hearts” Child Placing Agency, Children’s specialty courts, Child Protective Services and the CHCS’ Child and Adult Mental Health and Substance Use Service. Restoring Hope will build upon the success of these programs by coordinating comprehensive wrap around services that will allow for strategic braiding of funds to promote long-term sustainability
